The implementation and the possibilities of 3D metal printing in industry and in serial production were in the forefront of the technology day “Additive Manufacturing in Production” with the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. LZH and Trumpf Laser- und Systemtechnik on November 8th in Hanover. More than seventy participants, mainly from industry, took this opportunity to exchange ideas about the latest trends.

“The number of participants and the intensely discussed lectures show, that the topic of additive manufacturing is more important than ever”, gathered Dr. Rüdiger Brockmann, head of Branch, Product Management and Marketing, Trumpf Laser- und Systemtechnik GmbH, in his welcoming address.

Dr.-Ing. Stefan Kaierle, Head of the Materials and Processes Department at the LZH, showed the current developments and trends in this field: “Additive manufacturing is an important topic in all dimensions, we need nanometer-sized structures as well as XXL components. We are using more and more new materials, such as monocrystalline high-temperature materials. Also, special materials are interesting, such as bioresorbable magnesium and the shape memory alloy nickel-titanium.”

The lectures on topics such as powder-bed-based laser melting, laser deposition welding, simulation and challenges in the industrialization of additive manufacturing proved to be popular with the participants and were subject to lively discussion during the breaks.

The joint technology days of the LZH and Trumpf offer developers and decision makers in industry the possibility to learn about new technologies and approaches, make new contacts, and to talk to industry insiders. (Source: LZH)
