Forum “Industry 4.0 in the Optical Industry”

During the Munich Laser fair the Spectaris forum “Industry 4.0 in the optical industry” takes place on 24 June 2015 from 12:20 p.m.. The speakers are discussing about requirements, gaps and solutions which will lead industry 4.0 to success in the key technology photonics.

Optical components and systems are essential building blocks for the realization of flexible, networked production solutions among industry 4.0. Optical sensors and actuators register and influence quickly as well as accurately the operation of workpieces and tools. In this way they act as the key interface between software and hardware. Even in situations in which optics and lasers are the subject of the production itself, industry 4.0 solutions promise a higher quality and more flexible production process.

At many companies in the optical, medical and mechatronic industry the theme Industry 4.0 is still in an early phase of its development. According to a recent survey by the industry association SPECTARIS there will be a change in the future. Thus, about 80 percent of the surveyed companies expect in the coming years a major impact of industry 4.0 on their business.

Due to the trans-sectoral character of the topic many companies locate it at the management. From the close networking of the operating software with mechanical and electronic functions in all stages of production, the companies are expecting, among other things, an improved cost structure and the ability to offer more customer-specific solutions. Facts like insufficient data security, interface problems and a relatively high investment for implementation represent hurdles especially for SMEs. (Source: Spectaris)
