Zeiss Wins 2015 Thuringia Innovation Award for Confocal Microscope

The Zeiss LSM 800 is a confocal laser scanning microscope designed for applications in biomedical research which provides high image quality and greater flexibility in live cell imaging. The Airyscan module delivers 1.7 times higher resolution and significantly higher sensitivity than conventional confocal microscopes.

“When it comes to getting unbiased data from live cells or other weakly labeled samples, there’s no such thing as too much sensitivity, resolution or speed,” says project manager Bernhard Zimmermann from the Zeiss Microscopy business group. Scientists can resolve even fast movements of labeled proteins thanks to the scan speeds of Airyscan’s 32-channel detector.

“With an image size of 512 x 512 pixels, events can be captured at up to 8 frames per second,” Zimmermann explains. The microscope system continually monitors and calibrates the scanner position to guarantee a stable field of view and an optimum signal-to-noise ratio. Zeiss launched the microscope system in early 2015.

The competition is jointly organized by the Thuringian Ministry of Economics, Labour and Technology, the Foundation for Technology, Innovation and Research Thuringia (STIFT), the company TÜV Thüringen, and the Ernst Abbe Foundation. Prizes are awarded for outstanding innovations from Thuringia in the categories of “Tradition & Future”, “Industry & Materials”, “Communication & Media” and “Light & Life”. The jury also bestows a special ‘Ernst Abbe Prize for Innovative Entrepreneurship’ on an entrepreneur who has shown exceptional merit in the Thuringia hub of science and technology. To be eligible for the awards, innovations need to have been primarily developed or produced in Thuringia and must either have been launched recently or show significant potential of becoming successfully established in their market segment.
