With effect from January 1, 2015, two personal changes at Fraunhofer IWS in Dresden will take place. Dr. Udo Klotzbach takes over the management of the newly established business unit “Microtechnology”, a spin-off of the business unit “Ablation and Cutting“, which has strongly grown during the last years.
“Microtechnology” performs applied research for laser beam microprocessing applications. Its focus is the miniaturization of functional elements used for the design of machines, vehicles and instruments as well as in biological and mechanical engineering. The main emphasis lies on the generation of many different surface structures in micro- and nanometer dimensions on metals, ceramics and polymers and on diverse material components or layer systems.
The business unit includes the Micro Materials Processing group, Micro- and Biosystems Engineering, and Surface Functionalization.
In 1995, Klotzbach graduated from the Technische Universität Dresden with a diploma in electrical engineering. He has been working as a scientist at the IWS since 1999 and received a Ph. D. at the Technische Universität Wien in 2006.

Also with effect from January 1, Dr. Jens Standfuß heads the business unit “Joining”. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Berndt Brenner, who celebrated his 65th birthday in November 2014. Prof. Brenner continues to contribute his expertise to support his colleagues in the future.
In the business unit “Joining” IWS scientists have, for many years, focused their research into innovative technologies especially in the field of laser welding and adhesive bonding. The broad range of IWS technologies have been expanded by new methods such as friction stir welding, electromagnetic pulse welding and laser beam brazing. The integration of fiber composite technologies into the group “Adhesive Bonding“ and the setting up of the group “Component Design“ enable the processing of complex welding tasks in an interdisciplinary, more comprehensive manner.
The business unit includes the groups Laser Beam Welding, Bonding and Composite Technology, Special Joining Technologies, and Component Design.
After completing an apprenticeship to be a steelworker, Standfuß studied at the TU Dresden and graduated in material science. In 1998 he received his Ph. D. Since 1998 Standfuß has headed the group “Laser Welding“ and has decisively contributed to the establishment of the groups “Special Joining Processes“ and “Component Design“.
