The Future of Optics Production

On November 12th 2015, the Fraunhofer Institutes of Production Technology IPT, Laser Technology ILT, Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF as well as the Institute of Plastics Processing and the Department of Glass and Ceramic Composites at RWTH Aachen started the joint study with an industrial consortium. Industry partners are Ophir Optronics from Israel, Thales Angenieux from France, Meyer Burger AG from Switzerland, and the German companies Leica Microsystems GmbH and Sypro Optics GmbH.

The study focuses on four groups of themes, which were predefined by the industrial companies: freeform optics, miniaturization, functionalization, and materials. The project aims to identify future challenges in optics production and to elaborate approaches for corresponding solutions.

Together with the industrial participants, the researchers at Fraunhofer and RWTH Aachen strive to develop a perspective on optics production for the next decade, based on scientifically sound expert lectures and a detailed analysis of international market structures, product trends and future technological challenges. The industrial partners particularly profit from the technology know-how of the five research institutes and their broad network of industry contacts which thematically cover nearly all areas of the optics sector and its users.

The initial meeting of the consortial partners took place on November 12th 2015. The respective working periods and evaluation phases, which require the joint participation of the research institutes and industry partners, will follow quarterly throughout the course of the next year. During the meetings, the industry partners in particular are meant to substantially contribute to discussions. Results will be transferred via presentations, workshops and regular in-between meetings. The project will conclude with a detailed report and summary of the results in November 2016. (Source: Fh.
