Photonics4All is a European Outreach project, funded by the European Commission to promote photonics and light based technologies to various target audiences. For the target audience of young entrepreneurs & start-ups, the project developed a special activity format: the Photonics4All boot camps.

The boot camps help the participants to become future Photonics entrepreneurs by understanding their own perceived levels of risk tolerance through working in teams, by interacting with entrepreneurs, by simulating business tasks and working on real ideas in creative and down to earth ways. This highly participative programme will enable participants to gain the motivation and focus to build a successful business and create opportunities for themselves.

During lectures and a hands-on activity, the participants receive useful insights in various aspects of entrepreneurship, team dynamics and communication. The dynamics of starting up your own enterprise are further investigated during the Startup Game. The participants role-play as founders, investors and potential employees and negotiate deals, calculate valuation, found an appropriate staff mix and debate financial gains versus organisational control, thus acquiring valuable insights into start-up life. During Founders talks, successful entrepreneurs from Vienna, share their stories with the participants and give tips from their own experiences.

One participant of the first photonics boot camp in 2015, Christos Klamouris, has recently founded his own start-up with the ‘optowind-technology’: “The experience was fruitful, although I personally had already some marketing background. I also learned from my participation that I need to do my homework with my business model, in order to make it more attractive to potential investors. Thank you very much for your support during the event.”

The second Entrepreneurial boot camp will take place from 14-16 September 2016 at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. (Source: Photonics4All)
