Jochen Guck Becomes New Director at MPL

The Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, MPL, in Erlangen, Germany, welcomes its new director Jochen Guck: As of October 1st, he will lead the newly formed fifth division “Physics & Medicine”.

The professor and his team will begin their research in the field of biophysics and on the interface between physics and medicine. Guck: “At MPL, I get the opportunity for excellent conditions to focus on my research – with the other directors at my side, it’s the perfect catalyst for innovation!”

Guck has already developed new methods in the field of biophotonics, which he uses to assess the stiffness of the cell as a biomarker, for example for the differentiation between malignant or infected cells. This was where an optical stretcher similar to the one that Arthur Ashkin has just won a Nobel Prize in Physics for.

Before joining MPL, Guck acted as managing director of the Biotechnology Center of the Technical University Dresden.

The MPL, founded in 2009,  focuses on basic research into all aspects of the interaction between light and matter, from modern optics to photonics, quantum effects and their applications in the “real” world. It aims to extend the realm of the possible in the science and technology of light.

The fifth division of the MPL will be part of the Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin (MPZ-PM) to bring together physicists, mathematicians, and biomedical researchers under one roof. The MPZ-PM was conceived as a joint effort between the MPL, the Friedrich Alexander University (FAU), and the FAU University Hospital in Erlangen. The new scientific center aims to apply advanced methods from experimental physics and mathematics to basic biomedical research with an emphasis on the intercellular microenvironment. A generous initial support of sixty million euros from the State of Bavaria is allocated for putting up a new building on the campus of the University Hospital. (Source: MPL)
