Central Hesse Demonstrated Its Strength in Precision Technologies

Exhibitors counted precisely 3147 visitors to this year’s event, 21 percent of whom came from abroad. The visiting professionals were welcomed by over 180 exhibitors and partners at this year’s fair. 32 percent of visitors are based in the region, with 48 percent located in other German federal states and 20 percent abroad. As in previous years, exhibitors affirmed the high quality of visitors attending the event. “At the W3 Fair+Convention exhibitors were delighted to welcome a professional audience clearly able to appreciate quality, workmanship and innovation”, confirmed Helmut Kessler of Manx Precision Optics from the Isle of Man. Aside from regionally-based large corporations such as Leica Microsystems, Carl Zeiss, Hexagon and Pfeiffer Vaccum together with numerous hidden champions, there were also international key players such as Universal Photonics and Meopta on view. While locally based companies showcased their products and services to the national and international audience, other enterprises expressed their commitment to become involved with the high-tech region of Central Hesse. The benefits of the W3 Fair+Convention: an inter-disciplinary event featuring three industries of the future – all under one roof.

The program of lectures and workshops also brought its own emphases. Over 50 industry specialists delivered the latest know-how in areas such as photonics, automotive applications, laser technology, innovation management, design and product development, DIN standards, Industry 4.0, and international business.

In this respect, high-profile speakers such as Andreas Kaufmann (Leica Camera), Scott Stegert (Continental), Michael Schulz (Class 5 Photonics), Fabian Etzold (Dioptic), Georg Korn (ELI Beamlines) as well as innovation manager Heino Hilbig clearly pinpointed the technologies necessary for the future, and described how the requisite innovation culture could be created to this end.

The W3 Fair+Convention was opened by the District President of Gießen, Christoph Ullrich, Manfred Wagner Mayor of Wetzlar as well as Carsten Ott of the business development agency, Hesse Trade & Invest. The fair has long become a cornerstone in the efforts made by business, industry and politics towards developing even greater degrees of internationality and innovative depth.

“The fifth event has completely affirmed our raison d’être. We are on course: Through the format of this event, we are creating a forum for new innovations, which will provide the basis for many of the high-tech products used in our daily lives”, says a clearly delighted Christoph Rénevier, managing director of Fleet Events, the organizer of the fair. “The existence of this fair is a great thing for Central Hesse”, is how District President Christoph Ullrich describes it in his welcome address.

Over 300 technical school pupils and students visited this year’s fair. With talks, guided tours, and contacts to the industry, the event offered these potential new recruits a helpful insight in their own individual career opportunities. Companies harnessed the presence of this new talent for their own recruiting activities – the acquisition of new employees remains a central issue.

Again, demonstrating its crowd-pulling ability, the ELI Beamlines Laser Project was presented by the similarly named event partner. The “world’s most power laser” continues to seek like-minded organizations, able to jointly develop this ambitious project. Apart from the members of the Wetzlar Network, an invitation was also extended to other enterprises to be take part in the tender procedure.

International delegations from India, China and the USA were invited by Regionalmanagement Mittelhessen to a business matching initiative. Following a tour of the trade fair, the delegates had the opportunity to establish contact with Hesse-based enterprises – supported by Hesse Trade & Invest (HTAI).

Wetzlar Network and – new this year – the photonics consortium EPIC were the Gold Partners of the W3 Fair+Convention 2018.
